Half-moon Bunds

Our restoration techniques are simple, easy to adopt, low-cost, sustainable, and deliver visible impact in a short time.

About the restoration technique

In landscapes where rainwater is washed away and the land is left bare, half-moon bunds offer a simple but powerful solution. Shaped like a half moon and carefully dug across rangelands, these bund are designed to catch and hold rainwater where it falls or flows from uphill..

When the rains come, the curved shape of the bunds slows the flow of water, preventing erosion and allowing moisture to gently sink into the soil. Instead of washing away, rainwater is captured, stored, and absorbed; recharging groundwater and bringing life back to dry, compacted land. Over time, grasses and other vegetation begin to return, transforming bare ground into productive landscapes.

Dug using locally available materials, half-moon bunds are low-cost, easy to adopt, and environmentally friendly. Yet their impact is profound. Over the past years, we have dug more than 37,000 half-moon bunds in Tanzania, each one quietly changing the land. Together, they have helped restore pastures, increase soil moisture, and improve livelihood.

The result is visible on the ground and felt in daily life: more fodder for livestock, healthier animals, and stronger, more resilient livelihoods for local communities living in semi-arid areas. Sometimes, it’s the simplest ideas that help the land and the people who depend on it breathe again.
