They were never truly gone. They were waiting underground.
We are proud to celebrate an extraordinary milestone: 34 million trees restored across Central and Northern Tanzania through Kisiki Hai, also known as Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR). This achievement is a powerful reminder that what appears lost can be brought back to life.
Unlike conventional tree planting, Kisiki Hai works with nature. By protecting and carefully managing living tree stumps and root systems that already exist beneath the ground, farmers enable trees to regenerate naturally. Over time, degraded landscapes begin to recover, soils improve, biodiversity returns, and communities benefit from healthier, more productive land.
The photo above was taken in Engaruka Village, on the escarpment of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where local communities are restoring degraded landscapes through natural regeneration. It is one of thousands of places across Tanzania where the commitment of local people is transforming once-degraded land into thriving ecosystems.
This milestone has been made possible through our work with local communities, dedicated farmers, committed partners, and the incredible power of nature. Every regenerated tree represents resilience, collaboration, and hope for a greener future.
While 34 million trees is a remarkable achievement, it is not the finish line. It is another step in a much larger journey to restore landscapes, strengthen livelihoods, and build resilience to climate change.
The next million starts today.
