Kisiki Hai for Schools Project (KH4S)

Summary

Developing a population with a defined attitude of caring for the environment and being aware of actions towards nature is a continuous activity. It doesn’t develop overnight. It requires collective actions from adults and awareness creation in children right from the early years. Environmental activities such as group projects are ideal channels for preparing young citizens to understand and practice responsibility and participate in a collective understanding of life situations which has a direct bearing on their quality of life. We want our regreening efforts to be sustainable and long-lasting, that is why we teach Kisiki Hai regreening knowledge to students at primary and secondary schools in rural Tanzania to make sure the Regreening Revolution will keep going for years.

Building on our knowledge from the Kisiki Hai for Schoolchildren project in Kibaigwa town, together with Awaken Trees we scaled up and developed a second Kisiki Hai for Schools project (KH4S). It started in October 2021 and focuses on imparting FMNR (Kisiki Hai) knowledge to teachers and schoolchildren in both primary and secondary schools. Our goal was to reach at least 24 schools in nine districts of Central and Northern Tanzania and raise at least 10,000 trees. To reach students and teachers best, we developed two books, one in comic format for young children from nursery school to standard three, and one for standard four children to secondary school students. In addition to that, we trained teachers to equip them with FMNR knowledge and provide them with guidelines on how to form and run Kisiki Hai clubs successfully, because they are the ones who will be responsible for disseminating the knowledge to the whole school community and overseeing the Kisiki Hai clubs. We believe that changing children’s mindsets will impact changes in the entire family and in the community at large.
