Here at LEAD Foundation, we use Nature-based Solutions to restore degraded landscapes using natural elements while simultaneously improving human livelihoods. Nature-based Solutions benefit both people and the planet. We scale up land restoration efforts that focus on Nature-based Solutions. We focus particularly on agroforestry practices like Kisiki Hai (FMNR) and Rainwater Harvesting practices like digging half moon bunds and rainwater harvesting trenches.
Nature-based solutions are actions that protect, sustainably manage, and restore natural or modified ecosystems, and that effectively and adaptively address challenges of the community, while simultaneously benefiting biodiversity and human well-being. Nature-based solutions are considered alternatives to human-made infrastructures. They integrate conservation and protection of biodiversity as a basis, or a goal.
They are based on the notion that when ecosystems are healthy and well managed, they provide essential benefits to people. Such as increasing food security and reducing green house gas emissions.
Together with the local communities and our partners, we have achieved a lot through Nature-based Solutions. We have restored over 18 million trees in central Tanzania, we have dug over 27,000 bunds in Central and Northern Tanzania, we have also dug over 160 kilometers long of rainwater harvesting trenches.
The benefits of nature-based solutions include as follows:
- Benefits of Nature-based solutions
- Contributes to food security
- Improves the biodiversity
- Combats climate change
- Makes communities more resilient to climate change
- Improves water availability
